Brew a real eye-opener

Two small London-area companies have teamed up to create a coffee-flavoured beer billed as “breakfast in a bottle.”
Fire Roasted Mocha Porter is brewed by St. Thomas-based Railway City Brewing Company using Guatemalan Café Justicia coffee beans supplied by the Fire Roasted Coffee Company of London.
Barbara Ziola, head brewer for Railway City, said the beer has a distinct coffee flavour with notes of chocolate and a hint of sweetness.
The recipe for the brew includes molasses and oatmeal to smooth out the flavour.
“It looks dark, like a cup of coffee. We call it our breakfast beer,” laughed Ziola.
While the beer is dark and has a 5.5% alcohol content, Ziola said it the taste is not thick or heavy.
“We call it a two-glass beer. You can have a second glass without feeling weighted down,” she said.
The collaboration was brewed up at the recent London Wine and Food Show where the two companies were showcasing their products
David Cook, owner of Fire Roasted Coffee said it was a good opportunity to work with Railway City on an innovative product.
“They are our only local microbrewery and as a business community we should support and nurture the up-and-comers,” said Cook.
Ziola said Mocha Porter will be a seasonal beer, brewed in small batches over the winter.
It will be sold at Railway City’s retail store on Curtis St. in St. Thomas and some local bars and restaurants.
Ziola isn’t sure Mocha Porter will catch on but she noted that Dead Elephant, a specialty beer created by Railway City last year, is so popular the LCBO will soon start carrying it in about 50 outlets.
The beer was named for Jumbo, the famous circus elephant who was accidentally killed on the railway tracks near St. Thomas in 1885.
Cook has just come back from a trip to the co-op in Guatemala that produced the fair trade beans used in the coffee.
Cook said the leader of the coffee commune, Leocadio Juracán, recently had to flee the country after his harvest was stolen and he received death threats because of his involvement in Guatemala’s land reform movement.
Cook said Juracán is now in exile in Canada and will be in London later this month to speak about his experiences.
“We struggle with business up here but these guys face a life-or-death struggle to bring their product to market,” said Cook.
