We have had a couple interesting visits to the roastery lately from people selling coffee from where they live or are from.

The latest visit came with a phone call from Selena from Negril,Jamaica.

Selena called to say that she was here from Negril and was visiting some friends. One of these friends, Jim a regular of ours, found out she had brought 12 lbs of Jamaican Peaberry with her. This is probably one of the rarest coffees on earth and one we definetly wanted to try around here. Next thing you know she was on the phone with us. We brought her down to the roastery to show her around as Selena has a coffeehouse in Negril www.selinascoffeebar.com and her husband Big Roy roasts all the coffee on site in a steel roaster over open fire, we had alot in common, I have roasted coffee like this before and it takes a special touch. We roasted up a sample of the peaberry which while not highly sorted was fantastic. We left promising to keep in contact and possibly do some further trade when she got back to the island. So we have for a very short time some of this available, but hopefully she can send us more up soon.

The second visit was from a man from Brazil named Murillo.

Murillo is here in Canada attempting to market the coffees produced in the area of Brazil where he is from, the mountains of South Minas Gerais state. This is considered by many to be the finest growing area in Brazil. Murillo said many of his friends and relatives are working very hard to upgrade their facilties and farms to meet the certification requirements for Fair Trade and Organic. I wished him the best of luck and asked that he send me some pictures of his friends and their farms to post on our site. I am hoping to support the Coexcafe Co-operative as much as possible and I will be developing a special Brazil label for the coffee we will be roasting from them very soon.

Folks we love to meet people from other parts of the world who are part of the coffee trade. If you know someone we should talk to drop us a note.

Just finished up roasting the one and only batch we received of Jamaican Peaberry and all I can say is wow. Took it up to 425f a bit darker than usual

This isn't your dads JBM. The coffee was relatively unsorted and we set Owen our young apprentice on sorting it. In Ethiopia this job can pay 0.50 a day. He wouldn't go for it.

It is very creamy coffee with a bold edge probably from the diversity of the beans. The ripe tropical fruit is prevalent, mango perhaps? The finish is of solid bittersweet cacao.

In a nutshell, it is super duper. So we have 19 half pounds of this coffee, get it will you can!

FRC guys,

I roasted a small batch of the very Brazilian you mention in this thread. I roasted it to about Full City. I noticed that there was quite a bit of differentiation in bean colour during the roast but it evened out by the end.

I brewed up a cup for myself and it was a great cup of coffe. I sipped some black for taste and then added a little bit of cream and sugar (shame, shame)cuz that's how I roll! The coffee was very smooth and I detected butter, caramel, and nut flavours. Very good indeed.

I definitely want to take the next batch a little darker but the first run was great!
