FRC guys, I brewed a huge amount of coffee one day last week and only drank a cup. I put the rest in the fridge and served it as Iced Coffee later on in the evening. Everyone loved it. It was some of your Dominican. So I'm wondering, which coffees do you guys suggest for iced coffee.

Iced coffee is starting to come into its own. I couldn't give this away even last summer. It started as a mainly European tradition with North Americans going more towards a slushy style. I have really noticed lately people asking for this and even your local Timmies is getting into the game. When making iced coffee it depends how you are going to drink it. If you are drinking it chilled and black I would stick with a South American or Asian coffee as these are softer and very gulpable on their own. If you are adding milk and sugar then go towards a darker roasted, more full bodied coffee which will cut across the milk. Hope this helps to enjoy the brew during the hot summer months. Dave

I just received a 'Filtron' system for cold brewing. It is a big plastic hopper where you put in coursely ground coffee and (in my case) RO filtered cold water, let it stand for 24 hours, then siphon off the coffee. At that point it should be double or triple strength, and then I will mix it with ice, milk, chocolate, etc. depending on the type of iced drink I am making. It is the "TRUE" iced coffee method. I am starting off using the Sumatra so I will let you know how that works out.

I am using a Sumatra Fair Trade Organic for the iced coffee - it is roasted fairly high, and is great for the cold brew method that I use because the end result is a coffee 'essence' that is double to triple strength coffee - so you don't want to do that with a lighter coffee. If you are brewing it the hot method (which sounds like you are), then use the same guidelines as you normally would, just keep in mind that anything you add to the iced drinks later is usually adding sweetness (cream, syrup, chocolate, frozen fruit, etc.).

Thanks PHM! I'm going to have to try some of that iced coffee your making! I haven't tried it again since posting but with summer almost gone I think it is time for another batch!
